Every year, millions of young people across Nigeria silently battle mental health challenges, with research showing that about 20–30% of adolescents report significant emotional distress, yet most never receive professional help. The weight of stigma, fear of judgment, and a shortage of accessible services often leave them feeling alone. Universities and campuses are not exempt; many students struggle with depression, anxiety, and burnout while striving to excel academically.
Unfortunately, there is a scarcity of role models and mentors who can set good examples of a healthy balance of mental wellness and academic excellence. These realities highlight the urgent need for empowered youth leaders who can champion awareness, normalize conversations, and create safe spaces for their peers to seek help and thrive.
The Heralds Fellowship is an initiative of the Asido Foundation designed to raise a new generation of youth leaders who are passionate about mental health. Through this leadership development program, student leaders are equipped to spread awareness, break the silence, and reach adolescents with the message that mental health is just as important as physical health. It reflects our vision of a society where every young person can thrive in dignity, free from stigma and shame.

This fellowship serves as a training ground for undergraduate students in UI, OAU, UNILAG, LAUTECH, Lead City, and Poly Ibadan. It offers participants the opportunity to gain clarity on their passion through the Asido Leadership and Mental Health Fellowship. It is designed for undergraduates who already possess leadership experience and skills and who are eager to grow further.
As a Heralds Fellow, participants receive ongoing support from the Asido Youth Directorate throughout their term, along with long-term mentorship to guide their growth. They also benefit from training and opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge while taking part in a follow-up project in a secondary school that creates real, measurable impact. Beyond the difference they make in the lives of others, the experience also enriches their personal journey and adds lasting value to their CV.
